It doesn't get better than this...Chrysler vehicles manage to bring in 5 "Best Buy" awards!

Humes

Dodge Journey, Grand Caravan Among Five Chrysler Vehicles To Receive 2013 Consumer Guide Automotive ‘Best Buy’ Awards
Consumer Guide Automotive released its list of "Best Buys" for 2013 this week and included five Chrysler vehicles on the prestigious list. The list includes 2013 Chrysler Town & Country Minivan, Dodge Journey Midsize Crossover, Ram 1500 Pickup Truck, Dodge Grand Caravan Minivan, and Dodge Durango Crossover.
Every year Consumer Guide editors evaluate different vehicles in 19 categories by driving and "extensively testing" models released over the past year. The vehicles that editors feel best meet the needs of a customer are then recognized with a "Best Buy" award.
"We are honored to have five of our vehicles, including three Dodge vehicles, recognized by Consumer Guide Automotive as Best Buys for 2013," said Doug Betts, Senior Vice President - Quality, Chrysler Group said in a press release. "These awards are proof that Chrysler Group creates cars, trucks, crossovers, minivans and SUVs that both customers and critics appreciate."
The Chrysler Town & Country vehicle contains a standard 3.6 liter Pentastar V6 FFV engine with a six-speed automatic transmission. Customers can also expect a new Blu-Ray DVD system with HD Interface, a 115-volt power outlet for gaming devices and two USB ports for phones and MP3 devices according to Chrysler.
The Dodge Journey is advertised as the "fastest growing and most versatile" crossover of its size and offers either a four cylinder or six cylinder engine and either front or all-wheel drive according to Chrysler. Customers can also chose whether they want five or seven seats in the vehicle as well. The vehicle was named a IIHS Top Safety Pick for the fourth consecutive year.
The new Ram 1500 includes a more fuel efficient 3.6 liter V-6 engine and newly designed technologies. New features for the 2013 model include an eight-speed TorqueFlite 8 transmission, stop-start and active aerodynamics, including grille shutters according to the press release. The vehicle comes in nine trim levels and with a new Uconnect system.
The Dodge Durango is a seven-seater SUV that comes with a 5.7 liter V-6 engine. The vehicle was named an IIHS Top Safety pick as well due to its 45 different safety features.  Customers can also expect 20-inch wheels, Bluetooth Streaming Audio, and illuminated sun visors.

This isn't your mother's minivan...Get a look at the latest addition to the Chrysler lineup!

Humes

Introducing the New 2013 Town & Country S

Some people believe that if you drive a minivan, you can’t have style, and that to have style, you must drive something other than a minivan. At Chrysler, we disagree with both sides of that premise, now more than ever. Credit that to the latest addition to our vehicle lineup—the new 2013 Town & Country S.

Taking a cue from its Chrysler 300, 200, and 200 Convertible counterparts, Town & Country becomes the latest Chrysler vehicle to experience the “S” model makeover, a series of not-just-aesthetic changes that ratchet up the cool by a factor of 10. From badging to bezels, from performance to power, the new Town & Chrysler S is a sleek and stylish sight to behold. Features include:

  • A black chrome grille combined with black-background Chrysler winged badges located both front and rear
  • A black rear fascia step pad
  • “S” model badging
  • 17-inch aluminum wheels with polished face and black-painted pockets
  • Blacked-out headlight bezels
  • A monotone black interior unique to the Town & Country S
  • Black Torino leather seats with an “S” logo embroidered in the seat-backs and black ballistic cloth seat inserts
  • Piano Black gloss appliqués on the instrument panel and on the spokes of the black leather-wrapped steering wheel
  • Black headliner and upper consoles, black center console, and an “S” logo in the instrument cluster
  • Performance suspension that adds a new level of handling dynamics to the driving experience yet still provides a comfortable ride that’s expected in a luxury minivan

Official unveiling of the new Town & Country S happened just this week at the L.A. International Auto Show, where attendees had the chance to take in more than just the S model’s fit and finish. Also on display was the vehicle’s best-in-class entertainment system—a system, mind you, that is not relegated to the S alone, but one that can be found in the 2013 Town & Country Limited as well. Details are as follows:

  • A minivan-segment exclusive Blu-ray™ DVD system featuring two rear screens
  • Wireless headphones
  • An HDMI input for high-def gaming
  • Two USB ports for charging, RCA inputs, and 12v and 115v outlets
  • System is capable of playing both standard DVDs and Blu-ray discs

Three years, three awards...the Jeep Wrangler can't get much better than this!

Tues_humes

Jeep Wrangler a Repeat Winner of Two Kelley Blue Book's KBB.com Best Resale Value Awards

For the third consecutive year, Jeep Wrangler has been named Best Resale Value in its class by Kelley Blue Book's KBB.com. Wrangler also landed on KBB.com's Top 10 list for the second year in a row.

"The iconic Wrangler leads the Jeep brand's residual values," said Eric Ibara, director of residual consulting for Kelley Blue Book. "Not only does Jeep Wrangler command a significant amount as a used vehicle but it does so consistently year after year. Not surprisingly, Wrangler again finds itself on Kelley Blue Book's Top 10 list."

Kelley Blue Book's KBB.com Best Resale Value Awards are based on projections from the Kelley Blue Book Official Residual Value Guide, determined by a skilled staff of automotive analysts. These prestigious awards honor vehicles expected to maintain the greatest proportion of their original list price after five years of ownership.

"Jeep has continued to make the Wrangler better in every way, and we're delighted that it has once again been recognized by Kelley Blue Book and consumers alike as a tremendous value," said Mike Manley, President and CEO – Jeep Brand, Chrysler Group LLC. "Wrangler sales for the year are up nearly 20 percent because customers know they're getting ultimate capability in a more fuel-efficient package suitable for everyday driving, that will retain its value for years to come."

Chrysler answers the call of the Belvidere Police Chief with this awesome Dodge Dart!

Humes

Chrysler builds a 2013 Dodge Dart police car for Belvidere Illinois

The 2013 Dodge Dart is built in Belvidere Illinois and while the local police currently use Dodge Charger Pursuit models, they were unable to have a police car built by the production facility in their own town – until now – as the Chrysler Group produced one special new Dart clad in police livery for the Belvidere police department.

This whole project began when Belvidere Police Chief Jan Noble came to the Chrysler Group with the desire to have a police car built at the Belvidere Assembly Plant to join their fleet of Dodge Charger Pursuit models currently in use. The company is all about showing off how their vehicles can be used in different ways so they jumped on the idea to produce a unique one-off patrol car for the Belvidere police forced based on the locally built Dodge Dart.

The Belvidere Assembly Plant began with what looks to be a 2013 Dodge Dart Limited (chrome grille, chrome door handles) in Bright White Clear Coat and added a ton of police use lighting including small LEDs nestled neatly in the fog light bezels, the side view mirrors and in the crosshair grille, an LED spot light mounted on the driver’s side a pillar and, of course, the LED light bar mounted on the roof. The Dart police car has also been clad in a traditional Belvidere police decal scheme complete with “Emergency 911” on the rear quarter panels.

“The Belvidere Police Department wanted to drive what’s built in their town by their own citizens,” said Peter Grady, Vice President of Network Development & Fleet, Chrysler Group LLC. “This was a terrific opportunity to support the Belvidere police and continue to foster our longtime partnership with this city and region.”

The 2013 Dodge Dart Police Car made its grand debut today at a small ceremony including plant workers and local officials. After that, the Dart police car served as the escort vehicle for a convoy of Ram pickups filled full with food that was donated to provide for a better thanksgiving for those in need around the area of the Belvidere/Boone County Food Pantry. The Chrysler Group also purchased some 1,500 frozen turkeys to go with the tons of stuffing, potatoes and cranberry sauce (among other things) donated.

The 2013 Dodge Dart Police Car will serve as a full fledged cop car in Belvidere but it will be used predominantly for non-patrol and other ceremonial events. The officers of the Belvidere police force will provide feedback to the Chrysler Group as an effort to help the automaker determine whether the Dart could be marketed as a non-patrol vehicle to other police departments across the country. Grady went on to explain that roughly 20% of the police vehicles in duty right now are reserved for non-patrol uses so there could be a thriving market in a roomy yet efficient compact sedan for police use. The Dart Police car offers better than 40 miles per gallon on the highway and having driven more than a few non-patrol police cars in my day – I can attest that the Dart is no slouch in terms of performance so if an officer has to get somewhere in a hurry, the sporty compact cop car would be able to answer the call.

Not only does the Patriot Freedom Edition look amazing, it benefits wonderful charities!

Humes

The new 2013 Jeep Patriot Freedom Edition benefits military charities

The Chrysler Group has designed the 2013 Jeep Patriot Freedom Edition as a tribute to the men and women of the United States armed forces. For each copy of the Patriot Freedom Edition sold, the Chrysler Group will donate $250 to charities that help support those who serve and have served in the various military services in the US.

“We have created the 2013 Jeep Patriot Freedom Edition as a tribute to the brave men and women that have served, while acknowledging the Jeep brand’s renowned military history,” said Mike Manley, President and CEO – Jeep Brand, Chrysler Group LLC. “We express gratitude to those who have and are serving in the U.S. military, and in their honor we are donating $250 for each Patriot Freedom Edition sold to military charities.

“With segment-leading 4x4 capability, fuel economy up to 30 miles per gallon, and a unique inspiring appearance, the Jeep Patriot Freedom Edition is certain to appeal to consumers,” Manley added.

The 2013 Jeep Patriot Freedom Edition is based on the Patriot Latitude with either front- or rear-wheel drive in three exterior paint options - Deep Cherry Red Crystal Pearl Coat, Bright White Clear Coat or True Blue Pearl Coat. The Freedom Edition adds a military inspired star logo on the hood and on the rear quarter panel, unique 17” Mineral Gray painted aluminum rims with bright chrome lug nuts, a chrome trimmed front fascia center section and a aluminum Oscar Mike badge on the front doors (Oscar Mike is military jargon for being “on the move”). The Patriot Freedom Edition also includes a standard sunroof, the Security and Cargo group, all season floormats and the All Weather Capability Group on those models equipped with four wheel drive.

On the inside, the 2013 Jeep Patriot Freedom Edition wears a unique Dark Gray Cubic design cloth interior with vinyl bolsters, contrasting silver accent stitch work and the military star logo from the outside on the seat back.

The new Patriot Freedom Edition is powered by the standard 2.0L 4-cylinder engine mated to a 5-speed manual transmission which, when mated with the standard front wheel drive system, offers 23 miles per gallon around town and 30mpg on the open road.

The 2013 Jeep Patriot Freedom Edition carries a starting price of $22,440 (including the $995 destination fee) and these models are available right now at Chrysler Group dealerships around the country. Compared to a similarly equipped non-Freedom Edition Patriot, the upcharge for this special military tribute package is fairly small, considering that you get the sunroof, Security/Cargo group and the unique appointments inside and out. Most importantly, a portion of the price benefits those people who risk their lives to protect our freedom.

Like all of the Jeep Patriot compact SUVs, the Freedom Edition models are built at the company’s production facility in Belvidere Illinois alongside the 2013 Dodge Dart. With a name like Patriot, a build location in the US and the hearty American image of the Jeep brand – the 2013 Patriot makes for a great choice for the new Freedom Edition package.

Here are a few tips about hurricane safety that we wanted to share with you. Be safe everyone!

Sandy

Before a Hurricane

  • To begin preparing, you should build an emergency kit and make a family communications plan.
  • Know your surroundings.
  • Learn the elevation level of your property and whether the land is flood-prone. This will help you know how your property will be affected when storm surge or tidal flooding are forecasted.
  • Identify levees and dams in your area and determine whether they pose a hazard to you.
  • Learn community hurricane evacuation routes and how to find higher ground. Determine where you would go and how you would get there if you needed to evacuate.
  • Make plans to secure your property:
  • Cover all of your home’s windows. Permanent storm shutters offer the best protection for windows. A second option is to board up windows with 5/8” marine plywood, cut to fit and ready to install. Tape does not prevent windows from breaking.
  • Install straps or additional clips to securely fasten your roof to the frame structure. This will reduce roof damage.
  • Reinforce your garage doors; if wind enters a garage it can cause dangerous and expensive structural damage.
  • Plan to bring in all outdoor furniture, decorations, garbage cans and anything else that is not tied down.
  • Install a generator for emergencies.
  • If in a high-rise building, be prepared to take shelter on or below the 10th floor.

During a Hurricane

  • Listen to the radio or TV for information.
  • Secure your home, close storm shutters and secure outdoor objects or bring them indoors.
  • Turn off utilities if instructed to do so. Otherwise, turn the refrigerator thermostat to its coldest setting and keep its doors closed.
  • Turn off propane tanks
  • Avoid using the phone, except for serious emergencies.
  • Ensure a supply of water for sanitary purpose such as cleaning and flushing toilets. Fill the bathtub and other larger containers with water.

You should evacuate under the following conditions:

If you are directed by local authorities to do so. Be sure to follow their instructions.

  • If you live in a mobile home or temporary structure – such shelter are particularly hazardous during hurricane no matter how well fastened to the ground.
  • If you live in a high-rise building – hurricane winds are stronger at higher elevations.
  • If you live on the coast, on a floodplain, near a river, or on an island waterway.

Read more about evacuating yourself and your family. If you are unable to evacuate, go to your wind-safe room. If you do not have one, follow these guidelines:

  • Stay indoors during the hurricane and away from windows and glass doors.
  • Close all interior doors – secure and brace external doors.
  • Keep curtains and blinds closed. Do not be fooled if there is a lull; it could be the eye of the storm – winds will pick up again.
  • Take refuge in a small interior room, closet or hallway on the lowest level.
  • Lie on the floor under a table or another sturdy object.
  • Avoid elevators.

After a Hurricane

  • Continue listening to a NOAA Weather Radio or the local news for the latest updates.
  • Stay alert for extended rainfall and subsequent flooding even after the hurricane or tropical storm has ended.
  • If you have become separated from your family, use your family communications plan or contact FEMA or the American Red Cross.
    • FEMA has established the National Emergency Family Registry and Locator System (NEFRLS), which has been developed to help reunite families who are separated during a disaster. The NEFRLS system will enable displaced individuals the ability to enter personal information into a website database so that they can be located by others during a disaster.
    • The American Red Cross also maintains a database to help you find family. Contact the local American Red Cross chapter where you are staying for information. Do not contact the chapter in the disaster area.
  • If you evacuated, return home only when officials say it is safe.
  • If you cannot return home and have immediate housing needs. Text SHELTER + your ZIP code to 43362 (4FEMA) to find the nearest shelter in your area (example: shelter 12345).
  • For those who have longer-term housing needs, FEMA offers several types of assistance, including services and grants to help people repair their homes and find replacement housing. Apply for assistance or search for information about housing rental resources
  • Drive only if necessary and avoid flooded roads and washed¬ out bridges. Stay off the streets. If you must go out watch for fallen objects; downed electrical wires; and weakened walls, bridges, roads, and sidewalks.
  • Keep away from loose or dangling power lines and report them immediately to the power company.
  • Walk carefully around the outside your home and check for loose power lines, gas leaks and structural damage before entering.
  • Stay out of any building if you smell gas, floodwaters remain around the building or your home was damaged by fire and the authorities have not declared it safe.
  • Inspect your home for damage. Take pictures of damage, both of the building and its contents, for insurance purposes. If you have any doubts about safety, have your residence inspected by a qualified building inspector or structural engineer before entering.
  • Use battery-powered flashlights in the dark. Do NOT use candles. Note: The flashlight should be turned on outside before entering - the battery may produce a spark that could ignite leaking gas, if present.
  • Watch your pets closely and keep them under your direct control. Watch out for wild animals, especially poisonous snakes. Use a stick to poke through debris.
  • Avoid drinking or preparing food with tap water until you are sure it’s not contaminated.
  • Check refrigerated food for spoilage. If in doubt, throw it out.
  • Wear protective clothing and be cautious when cleaning up to avoid injury.
  • Use the telephone only for emergency calls.
  • NEVER use a generator inside homes, garages, crawlspaces, sheds, or similar areas, even when using fans or opening doors and windows for ventilation. Deadly levels of carbon monoxide can quickly build up in these areas and can linger for hours, even after the generator has shut off.

Following a few easy driving tips will help to keep everyone safe this Halloween

Humes

Halloween Driving Safety Tips

Drive slowly, and don't pass stopped vehicles. The driver might be dropping off children.

Park your mobile phone. Avoid distractions by waiting until you've stopped to call, text, or surf. Get more mobile phone safety tips.

Watch for children darting into the street. Kids can cross the street anywhere, and most young pedestrian deaths happen at spots other than intersections.

Yield to young pedestrians. Children might not stop, either because they don't see your vehicle approaching or don't know how to safely cross the street.

Communicate with other drivers. Always use your turn signals. And if you have to pull over to drop off or pick up your kids, turn on your hazard lights.

Chrysler pulls out all of the stops for the 75th anniversary of Mopar parts

Humes
Chrysler Rolling Out 24 Custom Cars For SEMA Show

To mark 75 years of Mopar parts and accessories, Chrysler is pulling out all the stops for this year’s SEMA show. The automaker plans to display 24 Mopar-modified vehicles (plus parts and accessories) in a 15,300 square foot booth in Las Vegas.

Top draws to the exhibit will likely be the SRT  Viper, the Dodge Charger Juiced, the Chrysler 300 Luxury and the Jeep Wrangler Sand Trooper, although fans of the Fiat 500 and Ram pickups will likely argue that point.

The SRT Viper being shown at SEMA will come with a carbon fiber X-Brace underhood, complete with the Viper’s “Stryker” logo. There’s a carbon-fiber-and-aluminum engine cover, too, as well as a carbon fiber aero kit. “Track Pack” wheels sprayed in hyperblack and LED driving lights complete the look.

Inside, the bright-yellow Viper gets a black interior with yellow accents, Sabelt racing seats with six-point harnesses and billet aluminum trim. There’s also an integrated, quick-release camera mount, as well as polished chrome door sill plates, and sandblasted aluminum pedals with the Stryker logo.

If your tastes run more towards sedans, but you still have a craving for horsepower, the Dodge Charger Juiced will get your attention. Under the hood of the “Copperhead” sedan lurks a Viper V10 crate engine pulled straight from the Mopar catalog. That’s good for some 650 horsepower, and a Mopar intake and exhaust make it sound even better.

The Charger  Juiced rides on a dropped suspension and wears 20-inch wheels, trimmed in black. Inside black Katzkin leather seats get copper accents, and copper-colored stitching is used on the steering wheel, shifter and armrest. Mopar-logo door sill guards, premium mats and a pistol-grip shifter round out the build.

If you prefer comfort over speed, you’ll want to check out the Chrysler 300 “Luxury,” which comes sprayed in True Blue Pearl Coat paint, with a platinum mesh grille. Rolling on 20-inch Mopar satin carbon wheels, the 300 “Luxury” also gets black-painted calipers, a coilover suspension and a 3.91 rear axle.

Inside, Katzkin leather covers the seats and shift handle, while premium mats, lighted Chrysler-logo door sills, and a bright pedal kit complete the look.

Chrysler hasn’t forgotten about Jeep fans, and it will be showing the Matte Dune Wrangler Sand Trooper in its booth. Under the hood lies a 5.7-liter Hemi V8 engine , installed with the help of a Mopar conversion kit. Portal axles are used front and rear, giving this desert-themed Wrangler another five inches of lift.

Ensuring that grip in the loose stuff is not a problem, the concept wears 42-inch Super Swamper Bogger tires, mounted on bead-lock wheels. Mopar branded Fox Shox and full underbody skid plates make sure the Jeep can handle all the terrain dishes out, but a Warn winch, rock rails and LED off-road lighting provide backup just in case.

As with the other Mopar creations the Sand Trooper gets a Katzkin leather interior, a rearview camera, CB radio, all-weather mats, and a Mopar Add-a-Trunk for secure storage on the trail.

As with previous SEMA builds, Mopar would be happy to sell you any or all of these accessories for your own Chrysler product. The industry-only SEMA 2012 show runs Oct. 30 to Nov. 2 at the Las Vegas Convention Center.

Style

Two new exterior colors, Winter Chill Pearl Coat and Black Forest Green Pearl Coat, round out the color options to eight. Standard 17-inch aluminum wheels and styling cues of the legendary Jeep Grand Cherokee give the Jeep Compass a sophisticated look, unparalleled in its class.

The Dodge Dart's interior design combines technology and style

Dodge_dart

“The all-new Dodge Dart is the showpiece for Dodge’s next generation philosophy of interior design,” says Klaus Busse, Chrysler Group’s Head of Interior Design. “The Dart interior takes the beautiful, precision-crafted interiors we rolled out last year and adds a little bit of fun with surprises of color, eye-catching ambient lighting and some really cool technology.”

According to Busse, the Dart’s award-winning interior design focused on four primary objectives:

 1.  Fit and finish and craftsmanship. High-quality, soft-touch materials; low tolerance for gaps in seams and where interior components fit together.

2. In a departure from previous designs, no boxy elements or straight lines. All the elements invite the passengers to touch them, says Busse.

 3. No more monochromatic interiors—the design team was more adventuresome in selecting and combining colors. For example, the Dodge Dart Limited employs two-color instrument panel stitching in Gray and Citrus Peel.

 4. Leading in technology—user features more commonly found on luxury models, including the available 8.4-inch Uconnect screen for navigation and communication, and the available 7-inch TFT instrument cluster with user customization.

And one more thing: “I don’t design cars I don’t fit into,” says Busse.  At 6’7” tall, it was important that the key dimensions of the Dart be roomier than others in its category, including Chevy Cruze, Ford Focus, and Hyundai Elantra.

The 2012 Dodge Dart is “a C-Segment car designed with some very smart interior solutions that you’d be hard-pressed to find in larger cars,” Busse says.

2012 Chrysler 300S V6 AWD Review

Humes

Last year the Chrysler 300 got a complete makeover, and this year the 2012 model still received some significant changes. There are some new models that have joined the lineup. A sporty Chrysler 300S that we’ll be reviewing this week, the new Chrysler 300C Luxury Series, and a new Chrysler 300 SRT8 super-sedan. The Chrysler 300S is a sportier 300, and comes with extras like 20-inch wheels and a firmer suspension.

The Chrysler 300 is a full-size four-door sedan that is comfortable, quiet and a cruiser. It can be ordered with a V6 or V8 powerplant and comes with an optional eight-speed automatic. The Chrysler 300 is one of just a few rear-wheel-drive sedans  that can be purchased for less than $35,000 making it a good choice for driving enthusiasts.

Chrysler 300S gets visual exterior treatments

Outside, the 300S receives a number of visiual treatments that set it apart from the standard version. The S gets a gloss-black grille and headlight housings framed against monochrome bodywork. The 300S looks a little more menacing as it also comes with large dark wheels and the S just looks more aggressive. Chrysler would like it to compete with the Cadillac CTS-V and it could be a poor man’s version of the Mercedes-Benz AMG E-Class.

The sedan is big and the driver can feel it the moment he or she sits behind the wheel. Interior dimensions and roominess are generous in the front and rear of the cabin. The 300S also has a luxury feel to it. The thick leather-wrapped four-spoke padded steering wheel offers an immediate luxury experience. On the S model, magnesium paddle shifters rise behind the horizontal spokes letting the driver know this a sport model and meant for spirited driving.

A luxury cabin

This S tester also came with Radar Red luxury-leather bucket seats with the S logo added for visual flare. The materials in the cabin are first rate and the S interior feels sporty.  The driver’s seat offers plenty of adjustability and the tilt-telescoping steering wheel makes it easy to find a comfortable seating position. The S model comes with a number of standard luxury features and offers even more optional goodies.

This 2012 Chrysler 300S AWD tester comes with a V6 and 8-speed automatic transmission ($35,820) The S model gets body-color trim with gloss-black grille and headlight trim, matte carbon and piano-black cabin trim, 300S logo on the leather seats, and keyless entry with remote start.

300S options include UConnect with 8.4-inch touch screen, Garmin navigation, Sirius Travel Link with Real Time Traffic and Sirius satellite radio ($795). the large, 8.4-inch screen is easily understood at a glance and easy to operate. Other available options include a Safety Tech package ($2,420) and also a Luxury package ($3,250).

The standard 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 is an award winning engine. It comes with double overhead cams, 24 valves, and variable valve timing that aids flexibility and good fuel economy. The V6 produces 292 horsepower and 260 lb ft of torque. The 3.6-liter powerplant is high-revving and delivers strong acceleration.

The Pentastar V6 is mated to a new highly efficient eight-speed automatic with E-Shifter. The automatic achieves improved fuel-mileage because it allows easier acceleration and lower engine speed on the highway. The V6 with AWD achieves 18/27 city/highway fuel mileage which is the same as the rear-drive with the five-speed automatic. At 50 mph, the 300 eight-speed will cruise all day long at just 1000 rpm’s allowing moderate interstate cruising using minimal fuel.

The 2012 Chrysler 300 with the eight-speed also gets a new shifter. It has four positions (PRND) and a +/- gate to the side for manual operation. The new shifter could be a weak point for the big sedan. The short stubby shifter looks like an inverted silver putter. The unit is actually an electronic switch and needs to be pushed properly to find the right gear. It’s easy to get the wrong gear and can be a bit confusing and it definitely takes getting used to.

Smooth and comfortable on the road

Driving the big 300S sedan feels much like driving a more expensive German luxury sedan. The 300S is smooth and comfortable, but if you need the power, the V6 has ample power to move all that weight with confidence. The four-door  S is not a sports sedan, but the sport suspension offers enough stiffness to give it a sporty feel. Body roll is acceptable when taking tight corners, and the electric-assist steering has good weighting and feel.

The available All-wheel drive is worth the extra cost and gives the sedan better stability in either wet or dry conditions. The ride height on 2012 Chrysler 300 AWD models is slightly lower than on 2011 models giving it a sleeker profile.

Overall, the 2012 Chrysler 300S V6 AWD is a roomy car that offers comfort, all-wheel-drive capability, enough power for most situations and has a unique  presence. At $35,820, it offers a good value.

2014 Chrysler 200 to Get 38 MPG, 9-Speed Automatic

Chrysler_200_with_trees

Long a back marker in the mid-size sedan segment, Chrysler will look to challenge for fuel economy supremacy against the likes of the Nissan Altima and Honda Accord when it debuts an all-new 200 sedan next year.

Exactly how Chrysler aims to do that is through a plan to offer cars with an increasing number of transmission gears. The new 200 will be the first Chrysler product to make use of a 9-speed automatic and is expected to deliver 38 mpg on the highway, just one mile per gallon ahead of the 2013 Altima.

According to sources Chrysler is spending $2 billion to revamp the 200, which is also expected to gain an upgraded interior with quilted leather and ambient lighting. Powertrains will continue to be a 2.4-lite 4-cylinder and a larger V6.

The mechanically-similar Dodge Avenger is, however, reported to be axed, while the new 200 will hit dealers in the first quarter of 2014 and ompany officials have said they expect sales to double the current model.

The news comes from a meeting of Chrysler dealers in Las Vegas where company CEO Sergio Marchionne previewed the automaker’s future lineup. A total of 2,600 dealers were in attendance as well as up to 80 percent of its dealers from Europe, Latin America and the Asia-Pacific region. In total, 66 new models were previewed.

Ranking high among the other new vehicles discussed were the Chrysler 100, based on the Dodge Dart platform, not to mention the Fiat 500L 4-door, a Jeep Liberty replacement, two new Fiat-based RAM commercial vans, as well as a new baby Jeep.

More than half a dozen all-new models are expected to arrive within the next 18 months.

Speaking at the dealer preview Marchionne commented that the new models, “represent our firepower for the years to come.”

2014 Dodge Charger Pursuit AWD is a great candidate for a police cruiser.

Police_car

With the Ford Crown Victoria out of the picture, automakers are in a fight for police car domination, and Dodge just upped the ante by adding an optional all-wheel drive system on the Charger Pursuit for 2014.

Previously, the Charger Pursuit was only available with rear-wheel drive, but adding the AWD system gives it an advantage over the rear-drive-only Chevrolet Caprice PPV and makes the car more marketable in Northern police fleets against the Ford Taurus-based Police Interceptor Sedan which also offers AWD. Dodge's system differs from Ford's mainly by being rear-wheel biased, but Chrysler also says that it features an active transfer case and a front axle disconnect system. These allow the Charger Pursuit to have great traction in slick road conditions and deliver optimal fuel economy in regular driving.

The new Charger AWD police car will only be available on the cars equipped with the V8 engine, and while Chrysler didn't announce fuel economy estimates, the regular Charger AWD gets 15 mpg city and 23 mpg highway. For top fuel economy, the Pentastar V6 is still available under the RWD Charger Pursuit's hood.

Chrysler's announcement of the Charger Pursuit AWD came on the same day that Ford announced the addition of the more powerful and more fuel-efficient 3.7-liter V6 to the Police Interceptor Sedan.

Dodge may add 'Barracuda' model to Challenger lineup

Barracuda

The upcoming re-launch of the SRT Viper (formerly a Dodge Viper, of course) may  be dominating the fast-Mopar coverage to date, but that super-coupe may turn out to represent just the tip of the iceberg. Automotive News is reporting that multiple Dodge performance products are likely to hit American streets over the next three years.

Perhaps most exciting are the prospective plans for the Challenger in 2014 and 2015. The muscular coupe is likely to get a significant bit smaller for the 2015 model year, with two or three inches set to be removed from its now-generous 116-inch wheelbase, as well as having launch control added to the specification sheet.

The upcoming SRT-tuned version of the Challenger, today the SRT8 model, may very well be dubbed the "Dodge Barracuda" for 2015. The resurrected 'Cuda will feature a supercharged 6.2-liter V8, which we are strongly in favor of. And though Dodge isn't offering up any output numbers for such a mill, current competitors from Ford (Shelby GT500) and Chevrolet (Camaro ZL1) would seem to indicate that 500 horsepower is the bare minimum for entry into this market slice.

In the nearer term, look for a new Daytona performance version of the Dodge Charger to appear in the first part of 2013, along with an SRT4 tune for the new Dodge Dart around the same time.

2013 Jeep Grand Cherokee Trailhawk and Wrangler Moab Special Edition announced

Jeep_grand_cherokee_special_ed

Jeep has lifted the lid on two new special editions for its lineup, both focused on energizing the brand's spiritual base of off-roading enthusiasts.

First up is a production version of the Grand Cherokee Trailhawk – an SUV first shown in concept form at Jeep's recent Easter Safari event in Moab, Utah. Available in both V6 and V8 powertrain configurations, the Trailhawk is easily recognizable as a rare bird via its signature appearance package. A black hood decal with red accent stripe dominates the front end, while 18-inch aluminum wheels, black headlamp buckets, gray grille surround, a rear light bar and signature badging complete the visual upgrades.

Of course, the Trailhawk is meant to be the functional front-runner for Grand Cherokee off-road prowess, too. The special edition GC comes standard with beefy, Kevlar-reinforced Goodyear Silent Armor all-terrain tires for sturdy, puncture-free trail driving. The Trailhawk also benefits from steel rock rails to keep its body safe. And, as befits the Jeep legend, a Quadra-Lift air suspension is in evidence, along with the standard Selec-Terrain traction control system, a rear electron ic limited-slip differential for V8 models, a two-speed transfer case and much more.

Not to be outdone by the Grand Cherokee, the Jeep Wrangler is also getting some special edition love. The Wrangler Moab Special Edition starts life as a top-of-the line Wrangler Sahara, in both two- and four-door form, before it is fitted with some extra off-roading kit.

Functional upgrades for the Moab include the same Kevlar tires as on the Trailhawk, along with a standard Trac-Lok rear differential (an electronic locking rear diff is available, too), winch-ready bumpers, rock rails and 17-inch Rubicon alloy wheels. The Wrangler Moab has also been treated to a unique hood, black accents on the fuel filler cap and taillamps, a premium soft top and, of course, edition-specific badging.

Look for both the Jeep Grand Cherokee Trailhawk and the Jeep Wrangler Moab to arrive at dealers this October.

The Dart Story: Dual Dry Clutch Transmission

Back_dart

On the 2013 Dodge Dart SXT, Rallye, and Limited models equipped with a 1.4L MultiAir engine, there’s a new and innovative type of transmission available that many Americans have never sampled before:  the Dual Dry Clutch Transmission, or DDCT for short.

The concept behind the DDCT is to provide the convenience and pure driving ease of a fully automatic transmission with the performance and fuel efficiency of a manual gearbox. You don’t have to compromise to get the best of both worlds — it’s a win/win.

The “dual-clutch” in the name might throw people off:  Yes, there are two dry-fiber clutch assemblies inside the transmission. However, there’s no clutch pedal for the driver to operate – only a shift lever with the traditional P, R, N, and D positions we know so well.

And in ordinary driving, DDCT is intended to operate like any automatic; or, when the driver wants to take charge, they can use the AutoStick® feature in the shift lever to up/down-shift manually.

Dodge engineers focused on making the Dart’s transmission as silky and unobtrusive as possible.  The early reviews are already coming in, and the reports are they succeeded.  One road tester noted that the DDCT-equipped Dart doesn’t sound, operate, or behave much differently, if at all, than a standard automatic transmission.

And that’s the whole idea.

The New 2013 Ram 1500 – It’s All in the Details

Ram_1500

With just a glance and from far away, two different brands of trucks might look vaguely similar. After all, both share general “truck” characteristics—the requisite bed and tailgate, decent ground clearance, four wheels, an engine, and a cab.

However, the closer you look the more details you see. Upon further inspection it turns out that what at first looked like two similar trucks are in reality just the opposite. One is merely adequate, nothing to write home about. The other is a Ram.

This experience is one we tried to echo in It’s All in the Details, a new photo hunt game that you can play by visiting the tab on Ram’s official Facebook page. The object of the game is easy: You’ll be given two similar-looking pictures, a time limit, and the chance to win a novelty Ram license plate. Your task is to study the pictures and then identify the differences between them, which are not always so apparent.

It’s funny, though. Once you start to see the differences, you can’t unsee them. The same is true with the new 2013 Ram 1500 compared to its competition—once you begin to see how Ram is better, it’s hard not to see it everywhere you look.
