Chrysler CEO on Oprah, Paul Harvey Super Bowl ads: 'It wasn't easy'

Chrysler Group LLC’s two Super Bowl XLVII ads are causing a stir online and throughout the U.S. automotive industry.

Sergio Marchionne, the Auburn Hills-based automaker’s CEO and chairman, said making Super Bowl ads, which this year were for the Jeep and Ram brands, is becoming continually more difficult, as expectations grow.

“It wasn’t easy,” Marchionne told News/Talk 760 WJR’s Paul W. Smith earlier today regarding the ads. “It’s getting tougher and tougher, and I’m really worried now about 2014.”

The second ad, called “Farmer,” was for Ram trucks featured the “So God Made a Farmer” tribute delivered by legendary radio broadcaster Paul Harvey and used as an anthem in grassroots videos created by farm families over the past three decades.

The first ad, called "Whole Again," featured Oprah Winfrey reading a heartfelt letter from the Jeep brand and the American people to the service men and women of the six branches of the armed forces.

"It’s an honor to lend my voice in support of those who serve us all," @Oprah tweeted on Twitter.

Since Fiat SpA, which Marchionne also serves as CEO of, has taken stake in Chrysler, the company has become known for groundbreaking Super Bowl ads.

In 2011, the company debuted its “Imported from Detroit” ad campaign with Eminem and the two-minute “Born on Fire” ad. And last year, the automaker’s “It’s Halftime in America” commercial, which used Clint Eastwood as the nation’s coach, caused a stir in the automotive and political realms.

Marchionne told Smith that Chrysler’s management team all watched the ads together with family members.
