Jeep's Rubicon is a More Rugged and Trail-Ready Version of the Wrangler

2013-jeep-wrangler-unlimited-suv_image-05-1680

“Easter Egg” details on the new Jeep Wrangler include a small decal of the front grill on the inside of the windshield. Look closely at the Jeep Wrangler and you’ll see several small tributes to the Willys model that started it all 60-plus years ago.

On the windshield, on the front seat passenger’s forward grab bar, and on each of the four rims are little styling cues that harken back to the Jeep’s heritage as a do-all troop hauler in World War II.

Some are more prominent than others, but collectively, Chrysler’s designers call them “Easter eggs” — little designs left behind to be found later.

“It’s something that started three or four years ago and it’s really taken off. Now I have to almost control it,” said Ralph Gilles, Chrysler’s vice president for product design. “They can get out of hand. But (designers) are so proud of what they work on, they really are. It’s almost like actively trying to leave a legacy for the next generation.”

At Chrysler, Easter eggs aren’t confined to the Wrangler, though the model has several, including a Jeep grille logo above the rear-view mirror and a silhouette of a Jeep climbing a rocky hillside in the passenger corner of the windshield. The grab bar is embossed with “Jeep” and “Since 1941.”

The newest comes on the rims of all 2013-model year Saharas and Rubicons with a small but unmistakable Willys Jeep silhouette.

Gilles said the silhouette marks the 10th anniversary of the Wrangler Rubicon

The wheel of a Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Sahara salutes the company’s past with a small decal in on the lower left portion of the wheel at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit. The same silhouette is also hidden away in the headlamp assembly of the 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee.

“The Wrangler is always going to be the original,” Gilles said in an interview last month at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit. “The Willys Jeep is kind of the godfather of the brand.”

The practice is far from exclusive to the auto industry, however.

“The idea of creating these moments of discovery in a design that reinforced a purchase, that’s very common in design. Apple excels at it,” said Dan Cuffaro, chairman of the industrial design department at the Cleveland Institute of Art.

Cuffaro said including small details consumers perhaps weren’t aware of at the time of purchase allows them to discover them later as a sort of reward for their purchase. An example he gave from a few years ago was one of the cell phones with changeable faceplates. A smiley face was etched into the metal underneath the cover.

Starting in the third quarter Chrysler will offer a small diesel engine in its 2014 Ram 1500 pickup, the automaker has said.

That makes Chrysler the first automaker to offer a diesel in a light-duty pickup.

The 3-liter turbocharged V-6 will be paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission. The engine is being produced by VM Motori.

Later this year that EcoDiesel engine will be available in the Jeep Grand Cherokee. It is rated at 240 horsepower at 3,600 revolutions per minute and 420 foot pounds of torque at 2,000 r.p.m. Chrysler made the announcement Friday.

Barbara Pilarski , Vice President, Business Development, Chrysler Group LLC has received the "Spirit of Leadership Award" from Women's Automotive Association International (WAAI). The focus of the WAAI is on the development and retention of women leaders and the education and support of all persons, without prejudice, who have an interest in the automotive industry.

The Spirit of Leadership Award is presented annually "to professional women in the automotive industry in recognition of their significant accomplishments in their profession, community and family." The award was presented on Saturday, February 9, in Orlando, FL.

"This recognition is very meaningful to me. I want to express my sincerest appreciation to the leadership and members of the Women's Automotive Association International for choosing me to receive this honor," Pilarski said. "I've been fortunate throughout my life and career to have had outstanding support from both my family and friends which has helped to bring sanity and balance to 'the other side' of my life. This has been a key enabler in allowing me to remain focused in the right direction in my professional life."

Pilarski joined Chrysler Corporation in 1985 as a Financial Analyst and has held key positions in various areas, including Controlling, Treasury Mergers and Acquisitions. In 2010, Automotive News and Deloitte selected Pilarski as one of the "Top 100 Leading Women in the North American Automotive Industry."

As Vice President - Business Development, Pilarski is responsible for negotiating key strategic partnership arrangements for Chrysler Group globally and for managing the Company's alliance relationships. She reports to Sergio Marchionne , Chairman and CEO of Chrysler Group.

Previous to her current position, Pilarski served as Executive Director of Chrysler Group's Mergers and Acquisitions organization and was responsible for all aspects of merger, acquisition and divestiture activities affecting North and South American business operations for Chrysler, and formerly for DaimlerChrysler business units.

Pilarski earned a bachelor's degree in finance from Wayne State University and a master's of business administration from the University of Michigan, and has also participated in Chrysler Corporation's Advanced Degree Development Program.

Pilarski has several community interests. She is executive sponsor of the Chrysler Women's Forum, which is one of six employee resource groups that leverages input from diverse employees to improve Chrysler Group's overall product and service offerings to customers.

Pilarski is also active with the United Way for Southeastern Michigan, serving both as a Steering Committee member for Chrysler Group's annual fundraising campaign, as well as a Board Member of the Alexis de Tocqueville Society.

She is active supporter of the Girls and Boys Clubs of Southeastern Michigan, working to ensure that these young men and women in Southeastern Michigan have exposure to strong role models who can inspire them to make good life and career choices.

During her acceptance remarks, Pilarski spoke of an automotive industry in transformation.

"We've all made great stride to transform this vitally important industry into a diverse, vibrant and inclusive industry of leaders," she said. "But we still have a long way to go. I'm eager and proud to be with all of you on this important journey."

Safety Tips During a Blizzard

Huems

The American Red Cross recommends everyone prepare for winter weather with these steps:

Get a Disaster Supplies Kit For Your Home

  • Three-day supply of water (1 gallon of water per person per day for drinking and hygiene);
  • Three-day supply of non-perishable items and high-energy food, and a manual can opener;
  • First-aid kit and essential medications;
  • Battery Powered or hand-cranked radio;
  • Flashlight with extra batteries;
  • Extra warm clothing, including boots, mittens and hats; and
  • Copies of important documents (birth certificate, title/deed to home, insurance policies, etc.) in a water-proof container.

Where can local residents find these supplies? Which store have ran out? Tell us in the comments section below this article.

Get a Disaster Supplies Kit for Your Vehicle

  • Blankets or sleeping bags
  • Jumper cables
  • Fire extinguisher (A-B-C type)
  • Compass and road maps
  • Shovel
  • Tire repair kit and pump
  • Flares
  • Extra clothing to keep dry
  • Sack of sand or cat litter (for tire traction)
  • Tow rope

Make a Winter Storm Plan

  • Have extra blankets on hand.
  • Have additional food and water stored to last seven to 14 days.
  • Ensure that every member of your household has a warm coat, gloves or mittens, a hat and water-proof boots.
  • Assemble a disaster supplies kit for your home and vehicle.
  • Have your vehicle winterized before weather gets severe.
  • Decide how you would communicate with your family members should you be separated and unable to travel when a winter storm hits.

Be Informed

  • Listen to local weather officials to learn how winter weather might affect your neighborhood.
  • Know the difference between a winter storm WATCH (a winter storm is possible in your area) and a winter storm WARNING (a winter storm is headed to your area).
  • Consider getting First Aid and CPR training in case you need to respond in an emergency.

If the Power Goes Out

  • Use flashlights, not candles, for light when the power goes out.
  • Use items in the refrigerator first, then freezer, then non-perishable foods.
  • Use generators correctly. Never operate indoors; do not hook up a generator directly to your home’s wiring.  Always read directions that come with generator before using.

Hazardous Winter Travel

The American Red Cross strongly urges everyone to monitor weather reports and follow the directions of local authorities. If travel is absolutely necessary during potentially dangerous winter weather, inform someone of your travel route, destination and expected arrival time. Store a disaster supplies kit in your vehicle and remember to keep the gas tank near full to avoid ice building up in the gas tank and fuel lines.

In Case of Snow or Black Ice

  • Stay with your vehicle. Do not try to walk to safety as you will risk developing hypothermia and/or frostbite.
  • Tie a brightly colored cloth (preferably red) to the antenna for rescuers to see.
  • Start the vehicle and use the heater for about 10 minutes every hour. Keep the exhaust pipe clear, so fumes won't back up in the vehicle.
  • As you sit, move your arms and legs to keep blood circulating and to help you stay warm.
  • Keep one window away from the blowing wind slightly open to let in air.
  • Leave the overhead light on inside the vehicle when the engine is running so you can be seen.
  • After the snow has stopped falling, raise the hood to indicate you need help.

Snow Shoveling Safety

The Snow & Ice Management Association (SIMA) offers these tips for those who choose to take on the cold, sweat and tears associated with digging yourself out:

  • Wear layers: SIMA says wearing layers of loose clothing allows you to peel some off as you become active and warm. They also say to avoid wearing heavy wools, manmade materials or other materials that don’t allow perspiration to evaporate.
  • Wear winter footwear: Wearing quality waterproof boots with good traction is very important. "Good traction is critical to ensuring that you don't slip and fall," SIMA says.
  • Loosen up: Take time to stretch and get limber before you start. "Shoveling snow is a workout so you need to stretch to warm up your muscles, particularly because you are shoveling snow in the cold weather. Stretching before you start shoveling will help prevent injury and fatigue," explains SIMA.
  • Push, don't lift: SIMA says pushing the snow to the side instead of trying to lift the snow to remove it helps you exert less energy. Pushing also places less stress on your body. "If deeper snow is in need of removal, take it in layers," suggests SIMA.
  • Stay hydrated: SIMA recommends taking frequent breaks and drinking lots of fluids. "You should drink water as if you were enduring a tough workout at the gym or jogging."
  • Utilize equipment: If possible, use equipment that can remove more snow with less time/effort, to increase your efficiency and reduce the amount of labor needed.

Chrysler CEO on Oprah, Paul Harvey Super Bowl ads: 'It wasn't easy'

Chrysler Group LLC’s two Super Bowl XLVII ads are causing a stir online and throughout the U.S. automotive industry.

Sergio Marchionne, the Auburn Hills-based automaker’s CEO and chairman, said making Super Bowl ads, which this year were for the Jeep and Ram brands, is becoming continually more difficult, as expectations grow.

“It wasn’t easy,” Marchionne told News/Talk 760 WJR’s Paul W. Smith earlier today regarding the ads. “It’s getting tougher and tougher, and I’m really worried now about 2014.”

The second ad, called “Farmer,” was for Ram trucks featured the “So God Made a Farmer” tribute delivered by legendary radio broadcaster Paul Harvey and used as an anthem in grassroots videos created by farm families over the past three decades.

The first ad, called "Whole Again," featured Oprah Winfrey reading a heartfelt letter from the Jeep brand and the American people to the service men and women of the six branches of the armed forces.

"It’s an honor to lend my voice in support of those who serve us all," @Oprah tweeted on Twitter.

Since Fiat SpA, which Marchionne also serves as CEO of, has taken stake in Chrysler, the company has become known for groundbreaking Super Bowl ads.

In 2011, the company debuted its “Imported from Detroit” ad campaign with Eminem and the two-minute “Born on Fire” ad. And last year, the automaker’s “It’s Halftime in America” commercial, which used Clint Eastwood as the nation’s coach, caused a stir in the automotive and political realms.

Marchionne told Smith that Chrysler’s management team all watched the ads together with family members.

If you missed the ads, here they are:
